Grange Garden Success

Garden volunteersSue Backhouse, Glenda Vincent and her team of volunteers celebrate another year of success with a SILVER GILT AWARD in the S and SE In Bloom competition. This year they did better than last year, but were just a tantalising two points short of a Gold award, which would have put them in the same league as the likes of Parham House, Hever Castle, and Osbourne House! The judges were particularly complimentary about the planting and maintenance of the garden with retention of some of the unique features created by Gertrude Jekyll. Unfortunately we have no record of the original plans at the Grange but the Archive team are going to try to identify them by searching the Archives of other libraries.

The Volunteering team meet once a month on a Thursday, and if you would like to join them please email Sue Backhouse at

A blast from the past from an ‘old’ volunteer in the North – I have only just looked at the web site and learnt that the Grange Gardens won such high awards – again.
Many congratulations and best wishes to all the Team. I do miss our ‘work’ mornings and the trips we went on.

Unfortunately I didn’t visit Sussex this last Summer – old age and health – but very much hope to visit Rottingdean next Spring/Summer and hopefully at a time when the volunteers are in the garden – just a brief look in so as not to delay any valuable pruning, planting etc.

I would recommend volunteering to work in this lovely garden with such a lovely group, it lifts the spirits.

Once again all the best for the coming gardening season
